Anchors Away Boat Rentals

Helpful Info

OPTIONAL PROP AND SKEG INSURANCE

We recognize that although we require our renters to be experienced boaters, many of our renters are unfamiliar with the waters here in the Florida Keys, which are very difficult to navigate.

In an effort to keep our customers in deep water and away from the many shallow areas and sandbars that we have in the keys, and to make navigation easier for everyone, Anchors Away has installed new touch screen Garmin GPS units on all of our boats. Each Garmin is pre-programmed with routes to all of our suggested points of interest, however, unfortunately due to the numerous shallow spots in the area, it is not uncommon to have a customer come back with damage to the Prop and Skeg.

Our goal, along with keeping our customers safe on the water, is to make our customers' experience as stress free as possible, and we truly dislike having to charge our customers for damages to the boat at the end of a great day on the water. Therefore, we offer and encourage our customers to purchase the optional prop and skeg insurance, which if added to the reservation would cover any damages to the prop and / or skeg ( very bottom of engine, see diagram below) in the event that a customer hits bottom and damages the prop and / or skeg.

Whether the customer chooses to take the optional prop and skeg insurance or not, we will always come out and tow you out of the shallow area free of charge. However, the cost of the prop and skeg if damaged can get quite costly.

In case the prop is damaged and you decline the optional insurance you will be charged $250 to replace the damaged prop.

In the case that the skeg is damaged, and you decline the optional insurance you will be charged $500 - $700 to repair the skeg.

Therefore, if you damaged both the prop and the skeg, it would be your responsibility to cover the cost to replace the Prop and repair the Skeg which would result in a total cost of between $750 and $950 per engine, unless you purchase the prop and skeg insurance.

For a single day rental, the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $75 /day.

We offer discounted per day rates for multi day rentals. Please see pricing for multi day rentals below:

  • For a 2 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $125
  • For a 3 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $150
  • For a 4 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $175
  • For a 5 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $200
  • For a 6 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $225
  • For a 7 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $250
  • For an 8 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $275
  • For a 9 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $300
  • For a 10 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $325
  • For an 11 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $350
  • For a 12 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $375
  • For a 13 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $400
  • For a 14 day rental the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $425
  • For a 15 day rental or more, the cost of the optional prop and skeg insurance is $450

If you purchase the insurance for a multi day rental you will be covered for the duration of your rental. The insurance will cover up to 3 incidents during the duration of your rental. If you have more than 3 incidents you will be responsible to cover any and all expenses for any additional incidents.

Example: If you were to run aground and we had to replace the prop and then you took the boat out the next day and damaged the second prop, you would be covered for the second prop as well. This also would apply if you damaged a third prop. In the very unlikely event you run aground and damage the Prop and / or Skeg more than 3 times during the duration of your rental , the insurance you purchased will not cover you, as the insurance will only cover up to 3 incidents.

We highly recommend adding the optional prop and skeg insurance to your rental, especially if you are not very familiar with the local waters as it is very easy to run aground.

“Slow Speed, Minimum Wake” Zones  are areas where vessels must be fully off plane and completely settled in the water. Any wake created by a vessel in one of these zones must be minimal (very small). If your vessel is traveling with the bow even slightly elevated while in one of these zones, it is not proceeding at “Slow Speed” as required by law.

IN MINIMUM WAKE AREAS KEEP THE THROTTLE IN THE IDLE POSITION, WHICH IS ONE CLICK FORWARD FROM THE NEUTRAL POSITION, DO NOT GIVE ANY ADDITIONAL THROTTLE UNLESS YOU ARE FIGHTING THE CURRENT AND YOU NEED A LITTLE BIT OF ADDITIONAL THROTTLE.

If you are stuck on the bottom, do not attempt to power out. IMMEDIATELY TURN THE BOAT OFF, AND DO NOT TRIM THE MOTOR UP as you will only drift into shallower water and make it more difficult for us to get you out. DROP YOUR ANCHOR AND CALL US AT 305-896-2219 and we will come and pull you out at no charge!! We have installed trackers on every boat and if we see that you attempted to power out after becoming stuck you will be assessed an automatic $500 fine PLUS THE COST OF DAMAGES! This is because if you run the boat in very shallow water in an attempt to power out, you will cause damage to the impeller and potentially the lower unit, which will be a much more costly problem than just the prop and skeg.

      • Determine your location and your safest route back to land.
      • Head towards safety.

      https://myfwc.com/fishing/

      • BE SURE TO USE FENDERS WHEN TYING UP TO A DOCK TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE BOAT
      • USE A MINIMUM OF THREE DOCK LINES
        • ONE AT FRONT OF BOAT
        • ONE AT STERN OF BOAT
        • ONE AS A SPRING LINE TO PREVENT BOAT FROM POTENTIALLY HITTING OTHER BOATS AT THE DOCK
      • IMPORTANT!!! YOU MUST PAY ATTENTION TO THE TIDES WHEN ANCHORING, ESPECIALLY OVERNIGHT.  IF YOU DON'T LEAVE ENOUGH SLACK IN THE LINES AND YOU TIE THE BOAT UP AT HIGH OR LOW TIDE, YOU CAN SINK THE BOAT AND YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY AND ALL DAMAGES
      • YOU MUST LEAVE ENOUGH SLACK IN THE LINE SO THE BOAT CAN FLOAT UP AND DOWN FREELY WITH THE TIDES. THIS ADDITIONAL LENGTH OF LINE WILL ALSO ALLOW THE BOAT TO MOVE FORWARD AND BACKWARD, WHICH IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE BOAT OR THE DOCK.  HENCE, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO USE AT LEAST ONE SPRING LINE TO PREVENT THE BOAT FROM MOVING BACK AND FORTH. IF YOU DO NOT TIE THE BOAT UP CORRECTLY AND SINK THE BOAT, YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY AND ALL REPAIRS.  IF YOU ARE UNSURE HOW TO TIE UP THE BOAT PROPERLY, PLEASE LET US KNOW AND WE WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO TEACH YOU THE CORRECT WAY TO TIE A BOAT UP AT THE DOCK!

WHEN TYING TO A MOORING BUOY (WHITE BALL)

      1. TIE A DOCK LINE TO THE CLEAT ON THE BOW

      2. GRAB THE ROPE HANGING OFF THE BALL WITH THE BOAT POLE

      3. RUN THE DOCK LINE THROUGH THE LOOP AT THE END OF THE LINE COMING OFF OF THE ANCHOR BALL

      4. THEN TIE THE END OF THE DOCK LINE BACK TO THE CLEAT.

      5. WHEN YOU WANT TO LEAVE, YOU SIMPLY UNTIE THE DOCK LINE, PULL IT BACK THROUGH THE LOOP OF THE ANCHOR BALL LINE AND YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY

WARNING!!!  IF YOU DECIDE TO ANCHOR AND GET OUT OF THE WATER IT WILL BE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

YOU MUST BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN ANCHORING AT THE SANDBAR AS THE CURRENT CAN BE VERY STRONG!!!

BECAUSE OF THE CURRENT, IT IS HELPFUL TO USE BOTH THE MAIN ANCHOR OFF THE BOW, AS WELL AS THE POLE ANCHOR THAT WE PROVIDE ON ALL OF OUR BOATS.  YOU WILL DRIVE THE POLE ANCHOR INTO THE SAND BY HAND AND TIE A LINE FROM THE POLE ANCHOR TO ONE OF YOUR REAR CLEATS.  THIS WILL HELP TO PREVENT THE BOAT FROM SWINGING BACK AND FORTH DUE TO THE WIND AND CURRENT

      1. ALWAYS TURN YOUR MOTOR OFF AND TRIM UP BEFORE ENTERING WATER

      2. USE CAUTION AS THE CURRENT CAN BE VERY STRONG

      3. STAY AWAY FROM OTHER BOATS

      4. DO NOT RUN A GROUND

FISHING IS NOT ALLOWED IN PROTECTED AREAS SUCH AS MARINE SANCTUARIES

Sanctuary Preservation Areas and Ecological Reserves in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary are marked by 30" diameter yellow buoys around the perimeter of the zone. Mooring buoys within these zones will be marked with a sticker which denotes that fishing is not allowed.

You must be 21 years of age to rent a boat from us.

In order to operate one of our boats you must be 21 years of age, comply with the Florida state Boaters Safety Requirements (see above) and sign both our online and paper waiver.

Yes, each of our boats has a limit on the number of people allowed on the boat, please see the individual boat listing for that maximum capacity.

Our hours change seasonally based on sunset time, and we are typically open from 8 am to sunset 7 days a week.

For a full day (8 hour) rental you can choose a start time beginning at 8:00 am, through every half hour, until 8 hours before closing time. Example: if it is summertime when we are open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm you can begin your rental at 8:00, 8:30, 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30 or 12:00. Under this scenario, you cannot choose a start time for an 8-hour rental after 12:00 noon since we close at 8:00 pm.

The same logic applies to our 12, 10, 4, and 2 hour rentals.

Unfortunately, due to our tight scheduling, once you choose your start time it cannot be altered. Please just call us and let us know if you are going to be late so we don't assume you are a no show.

In order to ensure that you get out on the water for your rental on time, please arrive to the marina at least 30 minutes ahead of your scheduled rental time. That way, we will have time to complete the necessary paperwork and also plenty of time to thoroughly go through the boat with you. We always take the time to make sure that you are comfortable with everything on the boat before we send you out on the water and this can take some time.

Please see our "Points of Interest" tab for all of our favorite destinations!

Dependent on the wind direction, the bay side is typically much calmer than the oceanside on a windy day. We have a comprehensive list of great bayside points of interest in the laminated notebooks that we provide on each of our boats and on our website under the "points of Interest" tab.

REFUNDS WILL BE PROVIDED IN THE EVENT THAT THERE IS A NAMED STORM OR A SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IS ISSUED FOR THE AREA ON BOTH THE OCEANSIDE AS WELL AS THE BAYSIDE.
Unfortunately, no refunds will be issued based on inclement weather such as cloudy skies, wind, or rain, as the weather in the Florida Keys is very unpredictable and changes quite rapidly.

Yes, every one of our boats have new touch screen Garmin GPS units, which are preprogrammed with waypoints and routes to all our suggested points of interest!

Before you depart on the boat in the morning, we will spend the time to make sure you are comfortable using the Garmin GPS. We also have laminated notebooks on each boat which have step by step instructions explaining how to operate the Garmin GPS units.

If you would like to bring your dog on the rental boat you must obtain permission ahead of time. We will consider allowing dogs on the boat on a case by case basis, based on the size of the dog, condition of the upholstery for that particular boat, etc.

Due to our insurance restrictions the use of any underwater breathing apparatus including all scuba gear, snubas, etc. is strictly prohibited.

For overnight rentals, if you would like to keep your boat at your chosen location instead of returning the rental boat to the marina each night you will need to call us at (305) 896-2219 to obtain prior approval. We will ask you where you will be keeping the boat and make sure you are familiar with properly tying up the boat at your chosen dock. As long as we are comfortable that the boat will be secured safely and properly we will allow you to keep you boat outside of our location overnight, you will just be required to sign a separate paper waiver agreeing to take responsibility for the boat for the times the boat is docked at your chosen location, instead of it being docked at our marina where we have 24 hour surveillance, sturdy dockage, etc.

Due to insurance restrictions, you cannot drive the boat in the dark, therefore the boat must be back at the dock at sunset and cannot go out again until after sunrise. We also request that you try and limit the use of the boat to 8 hours per day.

The customer is responsible for paying for the fuel they use during their rental period. The boat will be full of fuel when you leave for the day and you will be responsible for filling it back up at the fuel station at our marina when you return the boat for the day.

We offer Delivery for renters out of Ocean Reef and Marathon only. Delivery requires a 4 day minimum rental with advanced rental and adavanced notice! Please call us for pricing at (305) 896-2219.

Unfortunately, at this time, our insurance does not allow us to provide captains for the rental boats. We are only approved for "bareboat charters," meaning that you are the captain and are responsible for your own boat. However, please check back with us, because captains are something that we would like to offer our customers in the future!

We provide all Coast Guard required safety gear on all of our boats and also provide an anchor, anchor pole and dock lines. Furthermore, we rent fishing poles, coolers, floating mats, Go Pros with SD cards, snorkel masks and fins for a fee. There is also an onsite bait store that sells fishing supplies, as well as ice, snacks and drinks, and other sundries. Therefore, it is not necessary to bring very much with you, however, below is a list of items we suggest you consider bringing:

Towels, sunglasses, sunscreen, long sleeve shirt and hat for sun protection, snacks and plenty of water!

We Offer the Following Rental Add Ons:
